Step 1: Add the Total Fixture Wattage

Multiply the wattage per meter of your LED strip by the total installed length, or add the rated wattage of every lamp. For example, 10 meters of a 14.4 W/m strip equals 144 W.

Step 2: Apply the 20% Safety Margin

Never run a driver at 100% of its rating; continuous maximum load stresses the capacitors and accelerates failure. Divide total wattage by 0.8 to get the minimum rating: 144 W ÷ 0.8 = 180 W, so choose a 200 W driver. For strips on more than 8 hours a day, use a 25% margin.

Step 3: Account for Voltage Drop on Long Runs

Voltage drop is the number one cause of dim strips at the far end. A 12V system loses voltage quickly over distance; at 5 A, 10 meters of 1.5 mm² cable drops roughly 1.2 V, which is already 10% of the supply. Solutions in order of preference:

  • Run 24V instead of 12V — double the voltage halves the current and quarters the cable loss for the same wattage.
  • Use thicker cable, at least 2.5 mm² for runs above 5 meters.
  • Feed the strip from both ends with two sets of wires back to the driver.
  • Place the driver close to the midpoint of the strip rather than at one end.

Step 4: Match Voltage and Current Type

Confirm whether the fixture needs 12V AC, 12V DC or 24V DC before buying. For constant-current fixtures, note the drive current (typically 350 mA, 700 mA or 1,000 mA) and choose a driver with a matching output range.

Dimming compatibility is the most common field problem in LED lighting. Three rules keep you out of trouble:

  • Check the driver’s dimming protocol. Many LED drivers support TRIAC dimming (leading edge or trailing edge), 0–10V dimming, or DALI. A magnetic transformer without a compatible dimmer will produce loud buzzing and unstable light.
