An espresso machine has two big loads: a heating element to keep the boiler at brewing temperature (800-1500W continuous) and a vibration pump that delivers water through the group head (400-700W surge at every shot). Both run together when you brew. A 1500W espresso machine can pull 1700-2200W at peak, which is the sizing factor for the transformer.

Why transformer accuracy matters for coffee

Voltage accuracy affects coffee in two ways. First, low voltage makes the heating element run cool, so the brew temperature drops below the 92-96°C window that good espresso needs. Second, the pump runs slower, so extraction time changes and the taste shifts. A transformer that delivers 110V accurately keeps the machine in spec.

For this reason, choose an isolation transformer with a tightly wound secondary, not an autotransformer with a wide output swing.

Continuous duty for café and home use

Coffee machines in cafés run 8-12 hours a day, often with no idle time between customers. The transformer must be rated for continuous duty at the expected load. A 2000VA transformer running at 1500W continuous is at 75% load — within the safe zone. A 1500VA transformer running the same load is at 100% load, which shortens life and trips thermal protection in warm ambient.

For home use with two or three cups a day, the same size rules apply because the machine stays on continuously to keep the boiler hot.

Water hardness and boiler scale

Hard water leaves scale on heating elements and inside boilers. Scale insulates the element, making the machine work harder to reach the target temperature. Commercial espresso machines in cafés are often installed close to the bar sink. The transformer should be mounted away from splash zones — at least 60 cm from the sink edge — and protected by a drip shield if mounting on a low shelf. Power quality considerations

If the local 220V supply has frequent spikes, surges or brown-outs, add a surge protector on the primary side of the transformer. The transformer itself handles slow voltage variation but can be damaged by fast transients from lightning or grid switching. A surge protector costs little and protects a transformer that costs more.

For very dirty power (large voltage spikes, frequent brown-outs, generator use), consider a stabiliser between the mains and the transformer input. The combination of stabiliser + transformer is the standard setup for sensitive equipment in markets with unstable supply.

What about the steam wand

The steam wand on an espresso machine draws additional power when in use. A dual-boiler machine with simultaneous brewing and steaming may pull 200-400W more than during brewing alone. If your barista makes back-to-back lattes, the average load stays higher than during single-shot brewing. Choose the transformer with this sustained higher load in mind.

Should I include the grinder?

If you plug the espresso machine and the grinder into the same transformer, add the grinder’s surge to the heating load. RCD and water protection
