
What Size Low Voltage Transformer Do I Need? A Simple Sizing Guide
Here is the sizing question in its purest form, the one we get on WhatsApp every single day: “I have X lights. What size transformer do I need?” The honest answer is that nobody can size a low voltage transformer from a light count alone, because wattage varies wildly between fixtures. A single 50W lamp and a 5W LED can both be called “a light”. You need numbers, not names, and this guide shows you how to get them in about four steps.
I handle orders at a transformer factory in Yueqing, China, and I have watched buyers overspend on giant transformers “just to be safe” and underspend on units that run hot and die young. Both mistakes come from guessing. The method below is what our sales engineers actually use when you write in, so you can run the numbers yourself and arrive already knowing the answer.

Step One: Write Down Every Fixture and Its Watts
Grab a piece of paper or open a notes app. Walk the circuit and list every fixture that will run from this transformer, one line each. Next to each one, write its wattage from the label, not from the box, not from the listing, from the actual fixture. If a lamp says 12W on the bulb, write 12W. If an LED strip is sold per metre, multiply the watts per metre by the metres you are using.
Do not forget the small things. A transformer that feeds the garden lights might also feed a pond pump or a small path-light transformer daisy-chained off it. Count everything that draws power on that circuit, because the transformer sees the total, not the pretty picture in your head.
Once every line has a number, add them up. That total is your load in watts, and it is the single most important figure in the whole exercise. Keep that number, because everything from here is math on top of it.
Step Two: Turn Watts into VA, Then Apply the 80% Rule
Here is where the sizing actually happens. Transformers are rated in VA, which for lighting and resistive loads is close enough to watts that you can treat them as equal for sizing. What trips people is the other number on the label, and the rule we give every buyer: never run a transformer above 80% of its VA rating.
That 80% figure is not paranoia. A transformer running at 100% of rating heats up far more than the label suggests, heat is the enemy of the insulation and the winding, and real-world loads are never as tidy as the paperwork. Lights flicker, motors surge, a future fixture gets added, and the 20% margin absorbs all of it. If your load adds up to 200W, divide by 0.8 and you get 250VA, which is the minimum transformer you should consider.
So the two-line version of the method is: add every watt, divide by 0.8, round up to the nearest standard size. That is genuinely most of the course. Worked Example: Sizing a Transformer for Real Loads
Numbers are easier to trust when you can see them move, so here is a worked example using three common low voltage jobs. In each case the method is identical: total the watts, divide by 0.8, round up.

Look at the second row for a moment. A 100VA low voltage transformer for 60W of LED strip looks oversized on paper, and that is exactly the point. The 80% rule gives you room for a future extension, covers the driver losses and keeps the unit cool enough to live in a warm cabinet for years. Undersizing to save a few dollars is the most expensive economy in lighting.
If your load is not a clean match for a standard VA size, always round up to the next size. There is no rule that says a transformer must run near its rating, and a slightly larger unit runs cooler, lasts longer and quietly tolerates your mistakes. Buyers who size this way stop calling us back for replacements. One decision worth making early is whether you want one central transformer or several smaller ones near the lights. A single large unit feeding a whole garden forces long secondary cable runs and brings back the voltage drop problem we mentioned. Two smaller units, each mounted beside its own group of fixtures, keep every run short and every lamp bright, often for about the same total money. When the layout is spread out, smaller and local usually beats big and central.
LED Loads: Different Math, Same 80% Rule
LEDs made sizing both easier and trickier. Easier, because the wattages are tiny; a whole garden of LED fixtures might draw less than one old halogen lamp. Trickier, because LED fixtures have driver circuits and the transformer must be happy feeding them, not just big enough. A 300VA transformer running on 30W of LED can, on some designs, sit in an awkward no-load state that shortens its life.
The practical guidance we give buyers is twofold. Keep the LED load above the transformer’s minimum recommended load if the spec lists one, and keep it below 80% of the VA rating on the top end. If you are running a mixed circuit, halogens and LEDs together, size on the actual wattage total and do not inflate it just because LEDs are involved.

Three Mistakes That Break a Correctly Sized System
A wrong-sized transformer gets blamed for failures that are actually installation problems, so let us clear up the usual suspects. Thin secondary cable is mistake number one: a 24V system on undersized wire drops voltage over distance and the far lights dim, which looks like the transformer is weak when it is the cable starving the load. Use cable thick enough for the run length, not just for the current.
Overloading the transformer “temporarily” is the second. That extra string of lights you hang every holiday season pushes the unit past its 80% comfort zone, and the transformer that ran cool for eleven months starts running hot in December. If you know the load is seasonal, size for the season, not for the quiet months.
Ignoring the input side is the third. A transformer sized perfectly for your fixtures still needs the right input voltage and frequency. A 220V unit fed from a 110V supply will not deliver full output, and the reverse connection can destroy it. Check the nameplate against your wall before you wire anything. Notice a pattern in those three mistakes: none of them is really a transformer fault. That is why we encourage buyers to send photos of the nameplate and the wiring when they report a problem. Nine times out of ten the fix is a thicker cable, a lighter load or a matching input voltage, and the original transformer was doing its job all along.

What size low voltage transformer do I need for 100W of lights?
Add your 100W load, divide by 0.8 for the 80 percent rule, and you get a minimum of 125VA. So a 150VA or 200VA low voltage transformer would run that circuit comfortably with headroom to spare. Rounding up is always the safer direction.
Can a low voltage transformer be too big for my lights?
For plain magnetic low voltage transformers, a moderately oversized unit is fine and runs cooler. The exception is LED loads, where very low loading can make some transformers behave oddly. Keep LED loads within the transformer’s specified minimum and maximum, and a larger unit causes no problem.
How many lights can a 150VA low voltage transformer run?
Apply the 80 percent rule and a 150VA low voltage transformer is good for about 120W of steady load. That could be ten 12W fixtures, or fifteen 8W fixtures, or one string of higher-wattage lamps. Count your actual fixture watts, not the number of lamps, before choosing.
Do LED lights need a bigger transformer than halogen lights?
No, LEDs need less VA because they draw far fewer watts for the same light output. A circuit that needed 300VA for halogen lamps may only need 100VA in LED. Just check the low voltage transformer is rated for LED loads and keep the load within its recommended range.
Is VA the same as watts when sizing a transformer?
For lighting and resistive loads, the VA and watt figures on a low voltage transformer are close enough that you can size on watts and round up. For loads with motors or heavy electronics, the VA figure can run higher than the watt rating, so use VA if the label shows it. The 80 percent rule covers the difference.
